Nikon D40 Digital SLR Camera

The Nikon D40 was formerly rated as a Best Buy by Consumer Reports, so it has the best combination of features and competitive price. Some of the comments on the Nikon D40 Digital SLR as pulled from numerous reviews and web sites include the following:

Pros: Simple to use, many custom options available. Very good picture quality (however, not as crisp as the Canon Digital Rebel). It is lighter and smaller than most SLRs. Greater creative control allowed than many SLRs.

Cons: Slower shutter speed, a little big and bulky. While bright, very good picture quality, not the highest resolution - only 6 megapixels. Images taken at 1600 ISO are grainy. Low lighting shots without a flash, the highest useable ISO is 800.

Comments : The Nikon D40 does have more features than the Canon Rebel XT, which is higher on the recommenced list. But the Rebel does have an 8 megapixel sensor and better performance at high ISO settings.

-The Nikon D40 has several great qualities and it does keep pace with other entry-level D-SLRs. Even so, it just misses the top marks which are set by the Canon Rebel XTi and the Nikon D50 in regards to picture quality and performance. However, Nikon continues to hone and improve its cheap, entry-level D-SLRs to make them easier to use and higher quality.
