Micro Four/Thirds is a new Digital SLR format that will allow for smaller and cheap cameras
What may very well further confuse the public that buys digital SLR cameras is the announcement of the latest digital SLR camera format. It is the so-called Micro Four/Thirds system. both Panasonic and Olympus Imaging announced this “new camera standard” in late August. This format is said to give “dramatic reductions in weight, size and price.”
The reasoning behind this new format was stated in a joint communication from the two companies. It stated, that the global market for interchangeable lens type digital SLR cameras continues to grow steadily, but it still only accounts for less than 10 percent share of the total digital camera market. Considering the much larger market share that was held by interchangeable lens type SLR cameras when film was still the dominant imaging medium, it continues to seem as if there is ample room for increasing sales growth in the category. But since compact digital point and shoot cameras continue to offer an ever expanding range of performance and features, and recent market surveys show that customers choose compact digital models because they find digital SLR cameras to be heavy, big, and not as easy to operate.
