Please note, these cheaper models do not include the latest DSLR technology or all the “bells and whistles”, but overall these cameras are much higher quality than a regular point and shoot digital camera, the price is reasonable for a DSLR, and they are a great buy. ZDNet recently rated the best entry level DSLR cameras. Those would be slightly more expensive than the cheap models.
Canon Rebel XS EOS 1000D $499 4.3 star camera
Brand new, cheap digital SLR model from Canon. It was just release in August 2008. The picture quality of this camera is one of the best of the cheap, entry level models.
Canon EOS 350D Digital Rebel XT $429 4.5 star camera
This cheap Digital SLR camera was released just over 3 years ago, in March 2005. With the competitive price and decent reviews, this is a very good introductory camera. Consumer reports rated this cheap model as the recommended model.
Nikon D40 Digital Camera $409 3.9 star camera
The reputation of this camera is that it is a great starter camera for those new to Digital SLRs. This was rated in the past as a Best Buy by Consumer Reports.
Olympus Evolt E-410 $420 4.5 star camera
Excellent choice for a basic, cheap digital SLR. It has a live-view and a dust removal system as well as other features. However, the Evolt E-410 does not have as high a dynamic range as other basic SLRs.
Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 $400 4.25 star camera
Sony’s first entrance into the Digital SLR camera market. A solid all around performer. It is not rated as highly as the Canon.
